There are two type of hybrids, pure hybrids and assist hybrids. Pure Hybrids can operate in pure electric mode while assist hybrids can't.

Assist Hybrids : Honda Insight

The major problem preventing wide adoption of hybrids is the high rate of depreciation due to the 8 to 10 years hybrid battery life.
